There were 2 new developments during the past week about the Twitter API and, incredibly, they do not truly have anything to do with Twitter in any way. Rather they need to do with 'old school' blogging platforms WordPress and Tumblr adopting the Twitter API as their own.
What this suggests is that folk using third-party Twitter apps can now use them for WordPress also for instance, to a certain level as the implementations are not complete yet. We've enabled posting to and reading of WordPress.com blogs thru the Twitter API. Any app that permits you to set a custom API URL will work, WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg wrote roughly a week gone. I see the Twitter API as one of the new standards that as many applications should support as possible.
It did not take long for Mullenweg's words to take heed and emerging blogging platform Tumblr also rolled out an identical feature. Electrified by Wordpress' seriously clever use of Loren Brichter's new Tweetie options, we are launching our own Tweetie and Twitterrific compatible API. This Twitter-like API should make it simple for plenty of existing Twitter clients to start supporting Tumblr, Tumblr wrote. The search API has not been implemented also. There are two provisos for the apps themselves, they need to be in a position to set a custom URL for the API, meaning the Twitter API isn't hardcoded into the app, and some issues are certain to come up initially. it isn't the indisputable fact that you can post to WordPress.com from Tweetie that is that exciting part, the genuine issue here is the bigger picture.
With WordPress and now Tumblr and others highly likely to follow implementing the Twitter API, it becomes a de facto open standard with a massive chance that it becomes some real traction.
